Fluffy, Microbladed, Laminated, Tinted: SA’s Brow Queen Shares her Best Tips

South Africa’s brow Queen, Unaiza, chats about all things brows and why they are one of the most important features on your face…

Fluffy, microbladed, laminated, tinted: eyebrow grooming is currently one of the world’s fastest growing beauty treatments, with studies indicating the global spend of women on their brows is well into the Billions. And it is no surprise why.

In fact, I read a study recently by Victoria Anderson, a researcher at Cardiff University who writes about social media. She believes brows are a part of the power play underlying every selfie.

She points to the Latin for eyebrow – supercilium. “It is the root of ‘supercilious’, a way to be superior,” she says. “That’s mapped into the selfie culture, where there’s an image to let other people see that you have status and power in the world.”

And let’s face it, the phrase “eyebrows on fleek” has become common vernacular for the average Millennial.

The science of maintaining your brows

Of course, not everyone is born with perfectly-manicured brows, there’s a science to keeping them selfie-ready. In the decade that I have been doing brows, about half a million brows later, I have come to the conclusion that brows are definitely not one-size fits all.

I have spent years perfecting global trends and techniques and at UniQBrows we use a patented formula that uniquely measures your brow shape for your face shape: each brow should have a start, arch and end point suited to your face frame.

This is why no two people should have the same brow shape. Gone are the days of drawing on brows, plucking or tweezing. Brow shaping is an art form, it is a science; one which we have perfected over the past decade.

It is no surprise that eyebrows are one of a person’s most prominent facial features, given the many functions they perform

They help accentuate the eyes, shape the face, and play a powerful role in communication. Did you know that beautifully-groomed eyebrows are an anti-aging secret?

The right eyebrow shape can frame and flatter your eyes. The wrong one can make you appear aged, tired, or angry.

My celebrity clients know what I am speaking about when it comes to this shape, which makeup artists insist on drawing on their faces for photoshoots, not realising the subliminal message that’s being sent out from their brow shape.

No one has a perfectly symmetrical face, and brows that are unsymmetrical can throw off your facial balance, making one eye appear larger than the other or changing your entire look altogether.

Well-structured brows that are more symmetrical in nature are pleasing to the human eye

Brows are one of the first things people notice when they look at you; no amount of makeup can atone for bad brows. When ladies (and gents) come to any of my stores, what we focus on is finding the right shape for the person’s  face, scientifically of course, and when they leave, their entire look changes dramatically, as their newly manicured brows give them a fresh lift to the face and make their eyes appear larger and more youthful.

If there is one thing I leave with you today, it is that eyebrows are about power and self-definition. Every single woman that I have met in my stores and when I go out and do talks and masterclasses has a brow story, and a preoccupation with fixing her brows. Well-manicured eyebrows empower you, give you confidence and perfect your selfie game.
